Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science

The TetRRIs project is proud to celebrate the 7th annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, 2022.

This designated day encourages us to remember and continue to recognize the valuable role and contribution of women and girls to the field of science, not only as beneficiaries, but also as agents of change. Throughout history, women have played a significant and importance role in all fields of science, however their impact is often not given the same recognition as that of their male counterparts. This day is a reminder that science belongs to all citizens, and in order to move towards a sustainable common future, we need to engage and support everyone, especially women and girls, to participate and contribute to advancement in the field of science.

Across the EU, organizations, governments, and institutions mark and celebrate this day, while recognizing that this day is a symbolic one, as important work and contributions being made by women and girls throughout the year, as are efforts and actions to increase gender equality in the field of science. The Horizon2020 programme, which the TetRRIs project falls under, is committed to promoting gender equality across its work and has adopted an integrated approach to gender mainstreaming in research and innovation. Horizon2020’s gender equality approach is rooted in the objectives of fostering gender balance in research teams, ensuring gender balance in decision-making, and integrating the gender dimension into research and innovation content.

As gender equality is one of the keys of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), the TetRRIs project is committed to integrating gender equality into the project as a whole and in the work done by our partners. It is important that we go beyond the inclusion of the gender dimension in this project, and also encourage factoring in gender equality into RRI and territorial development more broadly. One of many examples of efforts being taken by our partners is VTT’s work with the Gender STI project that investigates gender equality in the context of scientific careers, decision-making, and the gender dimension within research and innovation content.
